What is the purpose of the courtyard in a house?
For ages, Interior courtyards have been created to aid the purpose of natural ventilation. It provides fresh air, improves oxygen supply, and dilutes odors. When adding a courtyard in designing, keep rooms, hall, or passages for cross-ventilation, which offers the maximum cooling effect.
When we're dealing with a site that is covered from more than one side, a courtyard could be a good suggestion to let in light, air, and create a usable outdoor space. So, what are the benefits of a courtyard design? Let's take a look...

1. Light
An interior courtyard sits under the open sky, flooding the space around it with daylight. Every room that opens into the courtyard gets plenty of sunlight during the day, helping in energy savings.

2. Indoor Outdoor connection
Creating a great indoor-outdoor connection, you can have between one to all walls opening onto the courtyard. With the addition of sliding doors, you can create a home that seamlessly transitions between inside and out. People who spend more time in courtyards have shown numerous proven health benefits.

3. Ventilation
Courtyard ventilation also has passive cooling effects, which brings the temperature of the surrounding places down. In addition, a courtyard filled with plants, fountain/water body, and a garden area helps keep the house cool even in hot climates.

4. Connection with nature
With a courtyard, we have the option to enjoy the refreshing joy of being amidst greenery without having to look for it in parks, valleys, and nature resorts. Simply head to our courtyard to rejuvenate our eyes with the sight of green. Also, it's beneficial for health.

5. Connecting spaces
A courtyard can also be a link in spaces within the house, providing access to different parts easefully. If we have a courtyard that is centrally placed in our house, it can connect to more than one space depending on the placement.

Now, Talking about the below-mentioned house plan which is in the plot size of 24'9" x 83'6" feet. This typical floor plan has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large living hall, a kitchen, a double-height dining area, a green-covered terrace, and an open-to-sky courtyard. When we enter the entrance lobby of this house we see there's is a seamless transition in between inside and out to the green-covered terrace. There is an open-to-sky courtyard on the backside which provides fresh air, improves oxygen supply, and dilutes odors to adjoining rooms. And at last, I would like to add this double-height dining area turns the entire living-dining hall into an open plan space, and you can see the effect is brilliant.
